“Truly effective” women’s group receives grant

By Martin Chapman on Monday, 18th March 2002.

Wednesdays for Women is such a success story that St Edmundsbury Borough Council have decided to provide the group with a 5 year grant to help it gain independence.

The Wednesday s for Women group meets weekly at the Leiston Centre on the Clements Estate and is regularly attended by 20 women. The sessions include exercise, refreshments, advice and discussions with specialist speakers. The Citizens Advice Bureau also attends providing confidential advice.

The group was established in 1997 after research identified a number of health problems among residents of the estate, and this week the Council’s Environmental Health and Housing Committee has provided a five year grant tapering off towards the end.

The group will now form its own management group who will take responsibility for employing staff including crèche workers and raising funds. In a statement the council said it is “committed to working with the group helping it continue to grow from strength to strength.”

Wednesdays for Women has had many achievements to date including helping women into full or part time work across industries and helped others into further education.

Announcing the grant, Jennifer Hart, chair if the Environmental Health and Housing Committee said: “New faces are continually arriving at the group, replacing those who move in, and that’s an encouraging sign which shows the group is being truly effective.

She went on to say: “It gives support and advice for a whole range of issues, it also helps to boost the confidence of its members.”
