Academy students prove themselves masterminds

Tuesday, 11th February 2014.

Students from Castle Manor Academy took part in a book mastermind event last week, as part of the Schools Library Services Book Mastermind competition.

Students competed in preliminary heats, in which they answered questions, against the clock, on a book selected from a list provided by the SLS.

The questions were delivered in true Mastermind style and the winner of each heat went through to the academy final, resulting in year seven student Elsbeth Hammond being runner-up and the overall winner Ethan Butler from year nine.

Ethan went through to complete in the area final on Monday, February 3, at West Suffolk House. Here he answered questions on his third book, SilverFin by Charlie Higson, as well as answering questions in a general knowledge round.

The competition was tough, with Ethan scoring joint top points and eventually being awarded the runners-up spot on countback.

The winner of each round will attend the county final, along with the four next highest-scoring competitors. Ethan’s score was high, but unfortunately not high enough for a slot in the final.

Ethan was pleased with his position and said: “I scored better than I thought I would in the general knowledge round. There were one or two questions which I struggled with, but I am pleased to have joint top score in the area final.”

Partnership librarian, Teresa Bailey, accompanied Ethan to the final and was very proud of his success.

She said: “Ethan did extremely well and achieved an incredibly high score. He was very calm, took his time and had clearly enjoyed digesting the details of his book.”

Mrs Bailey organised the competition this year and was impressed by all the competitors, saying: “It was a fantastic competition and I couldn’t be more proud of Elsbeth and Ethan. Well done to both of them.”

The book mastermind competition was run as part of an extensive programme of house competitions at Castle Manor Academy.

Students from across the acadmey take part in a wide variety of activities throughout the academic year.
