Action plans developed for residents' priorities for policing

Monday, 25th March 2013.

Parking on verges, parking and traffic around School Lane and heavy lorries in Duddery Hill and Hamlet Road are all under scrutiny due to public demand.

At a recent Safer Neighbourhood Team public meeting, residents voted on what they wanted the town's police to concentrate on over the next three months.

The three top priorities have now been examined by the SNT's executive, made up of the police, councils and other agencies, to decide on antion plans.

Residents did not specify any particular area where parking on verges was a problem, but police say Millfields Way has experienced the issue, so trhey are beginning there.

Through a partnership approach with haverbury Housing, they will begin by encouraging those who park there to find alternatives, such as garages or access roads.

PC Mike Potter said this was aimed as resolving the issue before the enforcement stage. "Putting a ticket on a vehicle doesn't solve the problem," he said.

He reminded motorists that a double yellow line covers all the land between the road and the edge of nearby property, so parking on a verge there is the same as parking on a double yellow line.

PCSO Kayla Packman has begun patrolling the area around School Lane at some school times.

This includes The Causeway, where many parents park to nip through to the schools, infuriating residents.

PCSO Packman said everything was fine when she was patrolling, but when she was not there it immediately reverted.

"I can't be there every day," she said. "There are other things I am needed to do."

PC Potter said police were also hoping to liaise with developers of the former Castle Hill school site about access to new ho,mes due to be built there.

"We need to work alongside developers to prevent the access problems escalating," he said.

Suffolk County Council highways department is to carry out a survey of lorries in Duddery Hill and Hamlet Road top assess whether there is a real problem.

If so, a weight restriction could be imposed, but there are no restrictions on the roads at all at present, so there is nothing police can enforce.
