Anna proves a clear winner over two days

Wednesday, 25th April 2012.

The Ladies April Stableford was played at Haverhill Golf Club over two days, Wednesday and Saturday, April 18 and 21, with a field of 29 ladies taking part.

Anna Fairhead was the clear winner with an excellent score of 37pts, five points clear of her nearest rivals. In second place was Sue Carr on countback from third place Gill Barke, a new member at Haverhill, both scoring 32pts.

The junior academy fundraiser was played on Thursday, April 19. The format was stableford, teams of four with the best two scores to count.

The winners of the team event were Haverhill’s greenkeepers, Glenn Norris, Craig Sisson, Gerry Scott and Jack Warwick with an impressive 85pts.

In second place with 82pts were the vice-captains, Sheila and Gordon Price, Ted and Anna Fairhead. In third place with 81pts were Sally and Simon Price, Brian Jones and Graham Hepworth.

The longest drive for men was Jack Warwick and for ladies Anna Fairhead. Nearest the pin on second was Derek Olive, on the eighth Neil Farenden, on the 12th Les Turner and on the 16th Robert Smith.

Paul Wilby gave the prize presentation afterwards and thanked everyone for their continued and valuable support. The academy gives Haverhill juniors valuable coaching every weekend throughout the year and just recently five of Haverhill’s juniors were selected to represent Suffolk.

On Sunday, April 21, the Roger Turley Putter competition was played, the event being organised by Mark Turley in memory of his father, Roger, who sadly died in 2005 and was a former member of Haverhill Golf Club.

The format was individual stableford and, in true Turley tradition, as Roger was renowned for his practical jokes, all competitors had to supply a wrapped novelty present to be given out as prizes at the end of the event.

The winner for 2012 was appropriately Mark Turley with a fantastic score of 44pts. In second place was Trevor Broomfield with 42pts on countback from third place Stuart King also with 42pts.

Mark was presented with the trophy by club captain Steve Ward, who helped organise the event and afterwards Mark thanked everyone for their support and taking part.

Haverhill’s head professional Paul Wilby and PGA professional Ollie Rush took part in the Suffolk PGA vs Suffolk Golf Union (Suffolk Amateurs1st Team) at Rushmere on Sunday, April 22.

The format was foursomes, Hambro scoring with four pairs taking part for each team. It was a closely fought match with the clear advantage resting with the SGU Team after the third match.

However it was the final pairing of Wilby and Rush with their eight-hole victory that saved the day for the professionals, to win overall by just one hole.

Scores: (SGU names first) Nathan Overton (Ipswich) and Matt Mann (Woodbridge) lost to Lawrence Dodd (Bury Golf Range) and Andrew Robinson (Lowestoft Driving Range) by three holes, Phil Westley (Hintlesham) and Josh Cottrell (Ipswich) beat Robin Mann (Southwold) and Tony Dobson (Stonham Barns) by seven holes, Chris Soanes and Ben Wallis (both Rookery Park) beat Keith Preston (Aldeburgh) and Robert Joyce (Felixstowe Ferry) by three holes, Ryan Talbot (Hintlesham) and Chris Bartrum (Diss) lost to Paul Wilby and Ollie Rush (both Haverhill) by eight holes.

The first round of the Parks Trophy County matches for Haverhill seniors was played away against Gorleston on Monday, April 23. In very pleasant but windy conditions the Haverhill team battled valiantly and the matches were all very close.

The Gorleston team utilised the home advantage to eventually win through to the next round by just three holes.

The match results were (Gorleston team first): Bob Cooper & Ron Clayton beat Eamonn Bareham & Kevin Eldred 1 up, Mick Lane & Colin Grant beat Gordon Price & Jim Walker 1 up, Richard Reynolds & Mike Haylett beat Dennis Harkness & David Cohen 2 up, Paul Platten & David Watson lost to Gerry Scott & Kim Ward 1 down.
