Antarctic adventurer to speak at chamber lunch

Tuesday, 16th February 2010.

Business people will be hearing how a physics teacher from Haverhill will be taking on one of the biggest challenges of his life in Antarctica.

Guests at the next Haverhill Chamber of Commerce Networking Lunch will hear how Roussel Capra, head of physics at Samuel Ward Arts and Technology College in Haverhill, will be one of only four UK teachers selected by the Fuchs Foundation to take part in an educational and scientific expedition to Antarctica in November.

Guest speaker Roussel will tell businesses how the expedition is intended to take teachers out of their comfort zone and inspire them in order to inspire students and make polar science more accessible to GCSE/A-Level students.

He said: “It is a great way to promote science in schools, primary and secondary. We have to develop our own scientific experiments, take them to Antarctica, collect data and bring them back to use it in school.”

The event, from 12noon to 2pm at Samuel Ward next Wednesday, February 24, is a great way to network with other businesses.

It is open to members and non-members of any business in the Haverhill area, from those just starting out to sole traders and large companies.

Sarah Howard, chairman of the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce, said: “We are delighted that Roussel has agreed to be our guest speaker this month.

"It will be a fascinating talk on how he is preparing for one of the biggest challenges of his career and how he will be bringing back knowledge and experience to share with his students in Haverhill.”

The cost of the lunch is £7.50 (incl VAT) for members and £15 (incl VAT) for non-members. Book your place online at www.suffolkchamber.co.uk/haverhill_chamber_of_commerce/events.
