Appeal for inactive to take part in the Great East Swim

Thursday, 13th February 2014.

Suffolk County Council is urging those aged between 12 and 25 and over the age of 50, who don’t regularly partake in physical activity, to rise to the challenge and register for the Great East Swim 2014 training programmes, particularly from Haverhill, where take-up has been slow.

For the first time in 2014, there will be a training programme made available to those over the age of 50, thanks to funding from Sport England.

This, alongside the young person’s Sportivate programme, funded by Sport England’s Sportive initiative and delivered in partnership with Suffolk Sport and Suffolk County Council, will provide the opportunity to receive three months fully supported training with professional swimming coaches, six months free membership to one of the participating Leisure Centres, as well as free entry to the Great East Swim 2014 and wetsuit hire.

Valued at over £200 per participant the opportunities are being made available at a small one-off charge of £25 per person.

Cllr Alan Murray, Suffolk County Council’s cabinet member for health and adult care, said: “It’s the first year we’re able to offer this fully supported training opportunity to those over the age of 50, as well as younger people.

"I feel that opening the training up to this audience, many with low levels of participation in sport and physical activity, will really help us in our efforts to make Suffolk the most active county in England.

“The programme, which focuses on the individual and their ability, aims to improve confidence, motivation, social skills, fitness and energy levels, self esteem, mobility and stamina.

“I’m confident this year’s programme will build positively on the success of its predecessors and provide much benefit to those taking on the challenge”

John Clough, director of Suffolk Sport, said: "Suffolk Sport is delighted once again to be able to offer the challenge of the Great East Swim as an incentive to get more people physically active.

"Last year the programme was a great success, transforming the lives of a number of inactive young people. This year’s expanded programme will enable even more people to be involved."

The Sportivate programme for those aged 12-15 and 16-25 will be held at Haverhill and Newmarket Leisure Centres, with 24 places available in each location.

The programme for those aged 50 and over, offers 24 places and will be held in Ipswich at Crown Pools.

If you’re interested in taking part in the training for the Great East Swim 2014, but would like further information please contact Corinna Hudson, Programme Coordinator on 07905 829162 or at corinna@greenleap.co.uk
