Appeal for more watchers to beat burglars

Tuesday, 2nd February 2010.

In the wake of a series of burglaries and thefts from cars, Haverhill police are appealing for more Neighbouyrhood Watch schemes to be set up in the town.

The last few weeks have seen a spate of thefts from parked cars in the town and in the villages around, and a number of burglaries of homes and business premises.

There are currently 52 Neighbourhood Watch schemes in Haverhill, but police would like to see more.

PC Rupert Beynon said: "These schemes have oftyen been set up after a series of burglaries in a particular area, but it would be better to set up schemes before that happens.

"We are happy to help set up schemes anywhere. It doesn't mean having to have lots of meetings or anything like that. It just needs someone in a street who will filter information to police and from police to their neighbours.

"We have found it helps neighbours to get to know each other, but it can also help to get an insurance discount, and burglars are aware when they see Neighbourhood Watch signbs, or stickers on windows, and it can deter them."

The areas with the fewest number of Watch schemes in Haverhill are on the south west side, covering the Clements, Parkway, Strawberry Fields and Hanchet End estates.

Police are currently puzzled by the recent increase in burglary and theft, which appears to have no particular pattern to it.

"It's got a lot worse in the last few weeks," said PC Beynon. "The rural burglaries are in the daytime, and the thefts frrom vehicles are mainly in the evenings, so there is probably a vehicle involved."

He said the police needed people to be extra vigilant, and re-iterated recent warnings not to leave valuables in cars.

Anyone interested in setting up a Neighbourhood Watch scheme can contact Diane Townsend, the community watch and safer neighbourhood team liaison officer for Haverhill and rural south, on 01284 774499, or by e-mail to diane.townsend@suffolk.pnn.police.uk
