Appeal to Save Squishy's Bacon

By Jo Deeks on Friday, 21st November 2003.

A CUTE piglet called Squishy has been rescued by an animal sanctuary and is looking for a new home before it grows into a giant porker.

Squishy, who is about seven weeks old, has been taken in at the Jaybeth Animal Sanctuary at Barnardiston, near Haverhill this year.

Jaybeth owner Carol Outhwaite said the piglet was found in the Newmarket area and had probably escaped from a pig lorry or been dumped by a farmer.

Although Squishy has settled in happily at Jaybeth, Carol realises when she grows bigger she is going to need a lot more room.

Carol said: "I realise that she looks like Babe this week, but she is going to grow into a 25 stone porker. She has got lots of character and is very bright. She sits on command and gives her hoof. She has lots of toys and goes for a walk on a halter, but she does not like traffic.

"A lot of people have come to see her here and fallen in love with her. I don't think we can offer her quality of life long term, so I would be happy if anyone could offer her a better deal. Pigs need a lot of food and a lot of space."

To offer a home to Squishy, or any of the other animals at Jaybeth, ring (01440) 786612.
