ATHLETICS - Yes, mum's the word!

Thursday, 7th September 2000.

West Suffolk confirmed their promotion to Division Three of the Southern Women’s League in emphatic fashion, winning their final match of the season at Ware by more than 100 points.
The star performance came from Marilyn Anness, who broke the club record for the hammer in winning the A string event with 27.48m. This keeps it in the family; the record having previously belonged to her daughter Ruth.
Such was West Suffolk’s dominance that they won 49 of their 53 events and were second in the other four to give a total haul of 261 points out of a possible 265; far more than they had scored before.
This showing confirmed their promotion after coming so close in each of the past three years.
There were four personal bests recorded. Under 13 Sarah Goodfellow moved up an age group and clocked 33.1 secs to win B string 200m.
Susanna Jolly won A String 800m in a time of 2min 32.7 sec and under 20 Karen Ruffell won B string hammer with a throw of 20.81m.
West Suffolk will now look to build on this success by strengthening their female squads, particularly in the junior ranks, to ensure a full complement at all the fixtures next season when tougher opposition can be expected.
