Bad luck hits Rovers during surprise loss

Thursday, 5th April 2001.

An injury-time penalty miss from Marcus Hunt and a disallowed goal from substitute Neil Green, prevented Haverhill from claiming a point at lowly Thetford, who surprisingly won 3-2.
Mark Brandt opened the scoring after four minutes when he scrambled home a free-kick from skipper Paul Miles.
Rovers should have gone further in front on the half hour mar, but Ben Cowling's shot hit the post before rebouding safely into the kepper's arms.
The visitors were made to rue this miss as Thetford equalised through Laurence Breen minutes later. He headed in a cross from Peter Smith.
On 74 minutes, Paul Mleczek put Thetford ahead from the spot after Paul Miles was adjudged to have handled and Breen made it 3-1 on 85 minutes.
Derrin Brindley made it 3-2 near the end after Neil Hammon went close for Haverhill.
There was late drama as Hunt missed a penalty after six minutes into stoppage time after Cowling was brought down.
Green had the ball in the net a minute later but to Haverhill's dismay the "goal" was ruled out for offside.
Vetran Striker Brian Holmes played up front for Rovers again after his exploits in midweek when he scored twice against promotion-chasing Needham market in the 3-2 victory.
Haverhill were expected to reach the final of the First Division Knock-out cup on Tuesday. They were 4-0 up going into the second leg f the semi-final at Conard United's ground.
On Saturday Rovers face a tough test at hamlet Croft when they take on high flying Downham.
