Bank holiday speed traps being set for motor-cyclists

Friday, 23rd August 2013.

Motor-cyclists in Suffolk will need to watch out for speed traps on Bank Holiday Monday aimed at reducing casualties on the roads.

Roads policing officers will be taking to Norfolk and Suffolk’s roads this bank holiday weekend in a continued bid to reduce the number of motorcycle casualties across the two counties.

In Suffolk there have been 14 fatalities this year, with six of those people being killed as a result of a motorcycle collision.

Officers will be taking to the roads this weekend, to promote safe riding principles, educating motorcyclists and targeting those who break the law.

Throughout Sunday in Norfolk and bank holiday Monday in Suffolk, patrols will be taking place along main routes to deter speeding and anti-social use of motorcycles.

Temporary Sergeant Dave Shaw from the joint Norfolk and Suffolk Roads Policing and Firearms Operations Unit said: “Increased numbers of motorcycles historically take to the roads at bank holiday weekends.

"Reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured on Norfolk and Suffolk’s roads remains a priority for us.

“Nationally a quarter of all people killed in road traffic collisions are motorcyclists and we hope by promoting road safety, educating people and where necessary using enforcement people will take heed and consider their actions before taking to the roads.

“The intention of the campaign is to make everyone aware of the dangers they could face and realise the potential consequences of, for example, speeding or careless/dangerous riding.”

Earlier this year a thought-provoking DVD was produced by Suffolk Police which gives a rider’s account of a collision he was involved in, just over two years ago in Cockfield.

‘John’s story’ shows the collision as it happened(he had a video attached to his motorcycle recording his journey). John sustained life-changing injuries and a sequence of photos shows him in hospital and recovering at home in a wheelchair, John talks about how his life has changed since the collision.

‘John’s story’ can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScnrNdbhL6o&feature=c4-overview-vl&list=PLD3282B3124BA8BDD so far the short film has been viewed by over 21,500 people.
