Big day in store for Queen Street

Thursday, 15th July 2010.

Haverhill's Queen Street undergoes a prestigious transformation tomorrow (Friday) when its new gates are put in place and officially unveiled.

The gates, made of steel in Haverhill to a special lime leaf design created by students at the town's upper schools, will shut the street off to traffic between the prescribed hours during the day.

A larger pair of gates will be installed at the Woolpack end of the street and a smaller set at the market square end.

The gates, provided by money from St Edmundsbury Council, will be lit with LDV low-energy lighting, and it is hoped they will become quite a tourist attraction as they are believed to be unique in Britain.

All are invited to the unveiling, which will happen at 1.30pm, and there will be other events and entertainment in the street through until about 3.45pm.
