Birthday Bronze for Marilyn

By Stefan Keymer - West Suffolk AC on Wednesday, 14th March 2001.

European Indoor Veterans Athletics Championships
Bordeaux - 8th to 11th March

Marilyn Anness, from haverhill and a member of West Suffolk AC, travelled to Bordeaux for the European Indoor Veterans Athletic Championships. These games are for athletes age over 35 years and they compete against other athletes within 5 year age groupings. Marilyn was competing in the Pentathlon and Pole Vault in the 45-49 year category.
Marilyn had her 50th birthday on the last day of competition and was competing against athletes up to 5 years younger in the 45 to 49 year category. But she had an excellent few days of competition, in the Pole Vault she achieved an Indoor Personal best by 20cm with a height of 2.10m. Just missing out on a medal in fourth position.
But in the Pentathlon Marilyn was competing in the 60mH, High Jump, Shot Put, Long Jump and 800m events. She gained Personal Bests, or very close to personal bests, performances in all the events and finished with 1844 points. This was enough for third place and a bronze medal, to go with her bronze medal from the Outdoor European Championships from last year in Finland.
Marilyn is now looking forward to the World Veteran's Athletics Championships held at Brisbane, Australia, during July. Where she hopes to perform well and maybe bring home a World Championship medal.
