Bogus worker steals cash from pensioner

By Rachael Doeg on Thursday, 17th May 2001.

AN ELDERLY woman had cash stolen for her home by a man claiming to be from a gas company.
The 77-year-old, from North Avenue, Haverhill, was called on at noon on Wednesday by a man saying he needed to check her boiler.
He then asked her to clear out her cupboard which housed the meter whilst he went to check the heating in the airing cupboard.
Soon after he left, the pensioner discovered a quantity of cash had been stolen.
The incident is the second bogus caller burglary in Haverhill this week.
A 74-year-old from Beaufort Court also had cash stolen on Tuesday after a man conned his way into her home.
Police are repeating their warnings for people to be on their guard.
Wednesday's burglar is described as white, in his 30s, around 6in with short, mousey coloured hair.
He was wearing a blue boiler type suit, or blue clothing.
Anyone with information about the incident or who recognises the description of the offender should call Suffolk Police on (01284) 774100, or Crimestoppers on (0800) 555111.
