Boyd pipped for head girl

Victory in the final event of the 40-race West Suffolk swimming open was all that separated Nicola Charlesworth and Sarah Boyd in the tussle for the senior top girl title.
City of Cambridge's Charlesworth and Boyd, of the host West Suffolk club, were locked together on points going into the open 100m freestyle at the end of two days of competition at Haverhill.
Both girls swam personal best times in frenectic finale, but it was Charlesworth who snatched the honor as she finished a second clear in s Cambridgeshire record time.
The Cambridge ace clocked 58.75 sec to her rival's 59.76 in neither's specialist stroke, but both reached qualifying time, as did third-placed City swimmer Laura Diplock.
The next five swimmers were all inside the Midland District qualifying time, showing the quality of the race.
There was consolation for Boyd, beaten 41-40, as her points haul helped West Suffolk top the 24-club competition with 406 points, from Norwich Penquins (371) and City (353). They were well clear of the only other team in three fiqures, Ipswich (123).
And the Haverhill hosts has a clean sweep of the leading three girls in the 12-13 years category with Carly Edwards (33) edging out Isobel Craig (30), with Dawn Jason, who also won the Suffolk county 800m championships which was part of the meet, third on 23 points.
Daniel Pilbrow won senior boys crown with 24 points, from team-mates Jason Procto (19) and Steven Hemsworth (16), with Hemsworth picking up the Suffolk 1,500m title.
Boyd won the 16-plus 200m backstroke (2:18.7INQT), open 100m butterfly (1:08.88DQT), 16-plus 200m butterfly (2:29.39) open 100m backstroke (1:06.76NQT), 16-plus 400m freestyle (4:26.65) and was third in the 16-plus 200m indvidual medley (2:28.89DQT).
