Brain storming success in the nationals

Thursday, 21st September 2000.

A FEW years ago, Nike ran a series of adverts featuring children saying “I’m Tiger Woods” while mimicking the golfing superstar.
But at Haverhill Golf Club they have their very own child golf prodigy in Miranda Brain, a national champion at the age of six.
Brain, a pupil of club professional Simon Mayfield, had qualified along with her sister,
- Tabitha, for last week’s finals of the Wee Wonders Championships at Foxhills, Surrey. And she came away as the girls 5/6 year olds winner.
Older sister Tabitha also found her form to finish third in the 7/8 years event.
Both are a product of Mayfield’s youth
classes where interest is so high, groups have had to be split in order to dedicate more time to individuals.
But Haverhill Golf Club Juniors went down at Hintlesham Hall to Woodbridge in the Suffolk Hanicap Cup on Saturday.
Haverhill went down by five games to one, but, as in the Hambro Cup final a week earlier, it could so easily have gone the other way as Edward Campbell and Lee Sargeant both lost at the last hole.
Again this was the Haverhill boys’ first loss in the event for two years.
At Coupals Road, the winners in the Mixed Invitation event were John Layland and his sister Jean Ball.
