Brown bin collections to change as a cost-saver

Changes are to be introduced to brown bin collection dates across St Edmundsbury next month, in a move to save the council £135,000 a year.
Letters have been sent to around 25,000 affected households across the borough explaining to residents both the change in collection dates and the reasons behind it.
Cllr Peter Stevens, St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s cabinet member for waste and property, said: “We have been able to look in detail at the efficiency of our brown bin collection routes.
"It is crucial to both the council, and the residents we serve, that we maintain the same high levels of service that we have in place at the moment.
“We are, however, trying to deliver more for each and every penny of council tax that we receive – and that is precisely what these changes, from March 9, will deliver.
“Through the rationalising of our routes, we will be able to collect people’s brown bins just as regularly and proficiently as before, but with one less vehicle on the road.
"It is the cost associated to the vehicle, that will then achieve the £135,000 saving each year. Every saving has a collective impact on helping secure core services or maintaining council tax levels are either frozen or increases are minimal.”
The new collection dates will come into effect from March 9 and will affect around 17,000 households in Bury St Edmunds area and a further 8,000 in the Haverhill area.
