Builder reveals community plan

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 28th February 2002.

Long-awaited plans for community facilities at the sprawling Hanchett End housing development at Haverhill have been drawn up by builders HC Moss.

Clifford Moss, a director of the firm, said the plans included a community hall playing fields and shops on a six-acre site in the centre of the housing development.

The site was initially ear-marked for a school but education authorities have decided it is in the wrong place. Plans for a surgery on the estate fell through, but the current plan could possibly include a community health project.

Mr Moss said he wanted to let local people know about the community facilities which would cost around £1 million to develop. It was hoped to include crèche facilities in the development, and that hiring costs for these and sports provision would cover future running costs of the building.

HC Moss has already built 450 homes on the estate, and residents there have frequently complained about the lack of community facilities.

Mr Moss said they had almost finished building in the area, apart from 300 homes linked to the community facilities plan, which would include social housing.

“We have just completed a similar facility at Foxton in Cambridgeshire where a school building is connected to a village hall. The building needs to be used during so that it supports itself. We would be willing to give the land and contributions towards funding it.

“I have already had people in touch with me who want to run a crèche there. We are going to arrange a meeting with St Edmundsbury Borough Council to see how it could work,” Mr Moss said.

The proposed community site is aimed to prove a focus at the junction of Haycocks Road and the Chimswell Link Road. It would also benefit residents of the Chimswell estate, with pedestrian, cycle and vehicle routes linked to surrounding areas.
