Business group hits out over roundabout

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 5th August 1999.

AN enterprise group says it is being given the run around over a roundabout at the entrance to the town it is trying to smarten up.
Haverhill business pressure group Enterprise 2000 has been trying to improve the appearance of the roundabout, which is at the Cambridge end of the bypass on the A1307.
Spokesman Keith Brown said they had suggested a water feature similar to those seen in France, had plans drawn up and possible sponsorship available.
They had then been told a water feature would not be suitable and no alternative scheme had been put forward by Suffolk County Council or St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
"We have been complaining ever since it has been there that it looks a mess," he said.
"The shrubs have died and no-one seems to care for it. We suggested a small water feature but were told we don't have them in this country.
"We asked what alternatives would be acceptable but were, so far, they have not come up with anything. We are going round in ever decreasing circles and we want something done about it."
Jerry Massey, director of Technical Services for St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said he had asked their landscape architect to come up with some ideas.
This had followed a request by Enterprise 2000 at a recent meeting with new Council Leader Mike Brundle.
St Edmundsbury would be taking over responsibility for maintaining the roundabout in October but no council money was available for enhancing it, he added.
