Business leaders tackle MPs over major Haverhill issues

Tuesday, 27th March 2012.

On the eve of the Budget, Haverhill firms attended a meeting at the House of Commons to discuss key business issues with Chambers of Commerce and MPs.

Representatives from Genzyme Ltd, IFF, and Carisbrooke Developments attended the West Suffolk Parliamentary Chamber Business Leaders Dinner organised by Haverhill, Newmarket and Suffolk Chambers of Commerce.

The dinner at Westminster, hosted by MP for West Suffolk Matthew Hancock and MP for Ipswich Ben Gummer, was held to give firms the chance to discuss key issues directly with the Chamber and MPs.

Chair of Haverhill Chamber Sarah Howard, who is also a Suffolk Chamber of Commerce board member, said: "The dinner gave businesses direct access to local MPs and the chance to discuss key issues directly affecting their businesses at Westminster.”

Among the issues discussed were the forthcoming budget, the A1307 and the effect on businesses, corporation tax and fuel prices.

Dr Christopher Homan, senior director, quality, at Genzyme Ltd, attended the meeting. He said: “This was my first meeting and I was hugely impressed with the vigour with which the members of the Chamber of Commerce pressed the MPs on the specific issues of Haverhill and the wider East Anglian community, including transport links, opportunities for young workers and need for meaningful vocational training.

“I thought it was a great opportunity to directly influence the country’s decision makers on the eve of the budget.”

Another event is being planned for September.
