Business start-ups on the increase in town

Thursday, 20th October 2011.

Haverhill is seeing an increase in new businesses starting up despite the economic climate, business people were told this morning by the new chief of Suffolk's enterprise agency Menta.

Alex Till, who took over nine weeks ago as the chief executive of Menta, which runs business start-up units in Haverhill, said: "You'd think that in the current climate there would not be many people wanting the start businesses, but we have seen an increase over the last two months in people wanting to take over managed workspace."

Mr Till, who has worked in several areas of business development, including as Suffolk County Council's business development specialist, said he had been told some unflattering things about Haverhill, but had decided to reserve his judgement until he saw the town.

He had found there was a great energy in the town towards developing businesses, the work of a group of organisations in the town.

"In Haverhill at the moment we can actually see that energy working," he said. "I want to capture that and enhance it."

He thought the new research park being planned at Hanchet End would be 'fundamental' to that aim, and he was working closely with Nic Rumsey, whose company is developing the site.

His other aim was to gain national recognition for the enterprise which was going on in Haverhill where there were many fantastic examples of businesses succeeding in allsorts of unusual areas.
