Call for mini-roundabout at entrance to new research park

Thursday, 13th October 2011.

Town councillors are unhappy about the access arrangements for Haverhill's planned research park at Hanchet End and are to ask for a mini-roundabout to be included.

Members of Haverhill Town Council's planning committee were making comments on the four plans submitted by Jaynic Investments to create the park.

The first concerns remodelling the ground and providing an access road and landscaping, the second is for building the research park, the third is for a hotel, pub/restaurant and creche, and the fourth is for 150 homes.

Committee chairman Cllr Pat Hanlon said his concern was that all the housing was served by one access road.

Members felt with the traffic created from the homes plus the traffic of employees at the park, the access road onto the A1307 between Sainsbury's and the Gateway roundabout was too much for the interchange planned which was just a ghost traffic island.

Cllr Clive Turner suggested it could be alleviated by making it left turn only, but members thought many motorists would not abide by that.

"I would like to see a roundabout there," said Cllr Phillip French. "At 5pm when they all turn out it will be mayhem there."

Members were adamant they did not want to see traffic lights there, Cllr David Russo describing them as 'a recipe for disaster'.

The town council has been asked by the planning authority, St Edmundsbury Borough Council for comments on the plans.

Members decided to call for a mini-roundabout, to ask why there was only one access road when earlier plans had shown two and to agree that the business park category of development should be imposed on the site to prevent other uses such as warehousing.

They also called for new bus stops to be provided with a traffic island for passengers crossing the A1307, and for waiting restrictions on the parking area to stop it being used as a park and ride facility, in the way that Sainsbury's car park often is.

They had no objections to the restaurant including takeaway facilities during the day but that they should cease at 8pm.
