Cambridge Park and Ride cost set to rise

By Martin Chapman on Monday, 29th March 2004.

The cost to “park and ride” in Cambridge will be going up be 30p a trip as of Monday.

The announcement made today by Cambridge County Council and Stagecoach means starting on Monday customers will pay £1.80 bringing it inline with similar services run in both Oxford and York.

Customers can still benefit from the weekly Megarider ticket at £8.50 for unlimited travel on Stagecoach’s services for 7 days.

Talking after the announcement of the increase of the service, Bob Menzies, Deputy Assistant Director, Highways and Engineering, for Cambridgeshire County Council, said they really was no other viable option.

He said: ““We recognise that the 20p County Council element of the increase will not be popular, but the alternative was to introduce a parking charge, which would have needed to be at a level of 50p to pay for the necessary equipment.”

However he’s confident that the service still delivers value for money. “even with a charge of £1.80 return, we still believe Park and Ride offers a high quality
alternative to driving right into Cambridge for commuters, shoppers and
visitors, and we will continue to work with Stagecoach to try and improve the
quality of the product.”
