Care UK chosen to run Place Court care home

Tuesday, 17th April 2012.

The private company which will run Place Court care home for the elderly in Haverhill when it transfers from Suffolk County Council management has been named today.

The council has named Care UK as the provider it would like to take over the running of Suffolk’s care homes and wellbeing centres.

The council says it has has undertaken a 'rigorous and detailed process in order to identify a provider that will deliver high quality care in facilities that will meet the needs of Suffolk people for years to come'.

Care UK will take on the running of the county council’s 16 care homes and eight well being centres.

Throughout the process, the council says, Care UK consistently demonstrated a commitment to providing high quality care to the people of Suffolk.

Care UK is now committed to delivering ten new care homes across Suffolk, providing a total of 680 specialist care beds, with 370 contracted directly to the county council.

By 2030, it is anticipated that the number of older people and those living with dementia in the county will double.

To tackle the significant increase in demand for services, the council is developing a new approach to service delivery which focuses on prevention and intense short term care, helping people to remain healthy and independent for longer.

However, there will always be people who need intense long term care. The council has committed to ensuring the people of Suffolk can receive this in quality facilities that make the most of advances in technology and care practices.

Talking at the cabinet meeting, Cllr Colin Noble, the council’s portfolio holder for adult and community services, said: “This whole process was about identifying a provider that would bring the necessary expertise and investment into Suffolk.

"Care UK is nationally recognised as specialists in dementia care with a proven track record of meeting the needs of the most vulnerable in society.

“At the start of this process, I made a commitment to meet with residents, their families and members of staff, so they can hear first hand how any changes will impact on them.

"I will deliver on this promise and visit each home once plans have been finalised. I fully understand how unsettling change can be and therefore I want to make sure the people affected have the opportunity to discuss plans directly with me.”

Negotiations between the county council and Care UK to finalise detailed plans are ongoing. A further report will be considered by the county council’s cabinet once they are complete.
