Celebrating success

Tuesday, 6th November 2001.

Pupils, staff and parents at Samuel Ward celebrated a year of success at the annual awards presentation evening.

Pupils from across all year groups received a record number of awards.

Headteacher, Howard Lay, welcomed those who attended and took the opportunity to thank companies and parents for their help and support over the last year.

Janet Welling, Senior Education Officer, praised the school for its outstanding success and Bob Shepstone, Chair of Governors, presented the prizes.

Neil Williams, Head of Art and Jane Wright, Head of Music, travelled to Hinchingbrooke to receive the Artsmark Gold Award for quality standards in drama, music, art and dance. This is a prestigious award and one the school is proud of.

Year nine returned from a trip to the First World War Battlefields in France, tired, but excited and moved by the experience. Poppy Day will mean even more to them this year.

Year 11 pupils attended a workshop and performance of Lord of the Flies at the Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich.

Our year 9 football side travelled to Mildenhall last week for their U14 BT County Cup replay. After a 2-2 home draw, Samuel Ward were keen to make further progress into the 2nd round. After a bright start, Mildenhall were the first to score, with rebound after a save from Ben Clow. Daniel Edwards, Ross Elkins, Lee Hurkett and John Gunson all went close, before Ross equalised just after half time. Despite end to end football and hitting the woodwork twice the game finished 1-1 and down to penalities. Ben Clow finished the hero, with two great saves and scoring the last kick to ensure a 4-2 win. The team will now play County Upper or KEGS in the next round.

Thirty-five of our pupils will be taking part in the West Suffolk Cross Country at Great Cornard on Tuesday 6 November, pupils from years 9-11 will take part in the individual and team event, hoping to get through to the county selection trials in December.
