Charity golf day nets over £2,000 for teenage cancer unit

Wednesday, 15th December 2010.

A Charity Day held at Haverhill Golf Club in September for the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at Addenbrooke's Hospital has raised a fantastic £2,140.

The event was held in the memory of Maggie Vale, daughter of Haverhill Golf Club member John Vale, who organised the event with the help from club professional, Paul Wilby.

On the day, 72 golfers took part with another 15 guests joining the competitors afterwards for a fabulous dinner prepared by head chef Jon Grimwood and his staff, at the golf club’s Parklands restaurant.

The meal was followed by a raffle and auction which was a great success and boosted the final total.

John Vale said: “I would like to thank all who took part in the day and to the kind sponsors who made such a great contribution between them.

"It was a very proud day for me and my family and we thank Haverhill Golf Club for enabling us to use their venue in order to host this fund raiser.”

Paul Wilby added: “It has been an honour to help John for this extremely worthy cause, and to be able to help the day become the success it was, in such difficult times.

"I was giving John a lesson one day when he mentioned his plan and he was pleased that we at the golf club could help.

"A big thank you must go to our voluntary committee who authorised the Charity Day to go ahead, and without their support we could not have staged this event.”

The winners of the Stableford team competition were: S Mitson, P Blye, L McDonald, A McDonald with 88pts, (on countback, with a back nine score of 45pts). In second place were N Farlie, G Wilson, C Powell & P Stevenson with 88pts also (back nine score of 42pts). In third place were M French, I French, W French & C French with 82pts.
