College stages musical show about World War One

Monday, 15th November 2010.

A classic musical entertainment about World War One comes to the stage at Samuel Ward College of Arts and Technology on Wednesday and Thursday evenings this week.

Oh What A Lovely War is a full-scale production with a cast of 27, orchestra, songs, comic and dramatic sketches and new technology, chronicling the course of the 1914-18 war.

The show was devised in the early 1960s and became a big hit in the West End before being made into a film by Richard Attenborough in 1969.

It takes the form of an end-of-the-pier show performed by Pierrots, and uses songs and true stories from the period, softening the horror of the war by this distancing, but also allowing the conduct of the war to be satirised.

Samuel Ward's production is directed by David Hart, who regularly directs for the town's Centre Stage Company, with Jane Wright as musical director.

The cast, many of whom will be making their stage debuts, have been working on the show since the beginning of term in September.

Tickets for the show are available from the school by ringing 01440 761511.
