Community ambassadors scheme looking for volunteers

Tuesday, 1st July 2014.

Would you be willing to give an hour or two to look after your local community environment? Haverhill Community Ambassadors are looking for more volunteers and are holding a drop in information event on July 11.

The Community Ambassadors Scheme was launched in February following the consultation on the Haverhill Community Budget Plan, during which members of the public told ONE Haverhill that they wanted to be able to do more to help keep their local community maintained.

ONE Haverhill is an independent partnership that brings organisations and resources together to make them more effective and efficient in the town – providing one voice for Haverhill.

The scheme is run and supported by Community Action Suffolk and the ambassadors are able to carry out minor repairs where they want and are able to, supported by St Edmundsbury and Forest Heath volunteer field officer Elaine Hewes and with equipment provided by Suffolk County Council.

The information event will take place on Friday, July 11, at Haverhill House in Lower Downs Slade from 1.30pm to 3pm. Elaine Hewes will be on hand to answer questions.

It follows hot on heels of a very successful community litter pick event in Burton End on June 7 in which dozens of people turned up to help the community ambassadors clear up the area around the rugby club, pathways, duck pond and park.

Elaine, who is a member of ONE Haverhill’s board, said: “The success of our recent litter pick in Burton End has sparked more interest in the scheme and we thought it would be a great idea for people to be able to drop in and speak to us about becoming a community ambassador.

"The information event is also for those who have already signed up and we will be discussing issues like health and safety and dates for a free basic first aid course for our volunteers.

"This is a scheme for Haverhill that is run and supported by people from Haverhill with the support of ONE Haverhill who set it up, Community Action Suffolk who administer it and Suffolk County Council who provide the equipment.”

Anyone who cannot attend the event but would like further information can email Elaine Hewes at elaine.hewes@communityactionsuffolk.org.uk.

You will need to complete a short form to register and then can discuss which area you would like to look after. The area can be as small or as large as you are able to help with.
