Community Pc Wins Top Award

Friday, 12th March 2004.

A police officer has been awarded Suffolk Police's top accolade, the Sheepshanks Award.

Haverhill Pc Rupert Beynon was to be presented with his award by Chief Constable Alistair McWhirter at a ceremony at force headquarters, Martlesham, this week.

The trophy is awarded annually for outstanding accomplishment in service to the community of Suffolk.

Pc Beynon received the award in recognition of his work as a community police officer for Haverhill. Among other initiatives, he was instrumental in setting up estate inpections, to identify and help remedy problems, such as graffiti, poor lighting and abondoned vehicles. He also initiated a 'bogus caller' awareness campaign to help protect residents from distraction crimes.

The success of these projects has resulted in a significant reduction in incidents of anti-social behaviour, increased safety for residents and an overall improvement in the environment of the local community.
