Council agrees to give £30,000 towards masterpla

Wednesday, 26th November 2014.

Town councillors last night ignored a plea from a member of the public to think again about donating £30,000 towards the masterplan process for the town centre.

During the public forum of Haverhill Town Council, resident John Burns said it was a bit hypocritical to have made such a fuss about having around £30,000 a year for four years cut from their finances by St Edmundsbury, and then to give this year' money straight back to the borough.

He contended that ONE Haverhill, which is carrying out the masterplan creation process, was just an arm of the borough council, and one that met in secret.

He asked members to review the decision of their finance committee to allocate the money, which is for a survey by consultants of the town centre an people's aspirations for its development.

Town mayor Cllr Roger Andre told him the money was coming from a separate pot already set aside by the town council and nothing to do with the extra council tax which they had raised to replace the cut in council tax support grant.

Members agreed unanimously to ratify the decision to make the money available to ONE Haverhill, in which the ton council is a partner.
