Council to plough ahead with upping car park charges

Tuesday, 18th January 2011.

Councillors are tomorrow expected to rubber stamp the decision to raise car parking charges in St Edmundsbury, including some of those in Haverhill, despite protests from the community.

The council's cabinet is to consider the results of the public consultation on the issue which has taken place in recent weeks.

The agenda item for tomorrow says: "The majority view of the stakeholder and public consultees was that they did not wish to see any increase in parking charges.

"However it is important that the council continues to generate a reasonable return on its considerable investment in parking, to be mindful of the impact of the increase in the rate of VAT and to use the charges to manage the appropriate use of the car parks."

The recommendation is that the pricing increase should go ahead.

The lomger stay increases have provoke the most objection, with the car parks at Ehringshausen Way, the leaisure centre and the Meadows set to rise by 30p to £2.

The over one hour charge at the town hall car park will also go up 30p from £1.20 to £1.50.

The new charges will come into operation on April 4.
