Councillor in charge of fire service cuts stands down

Tuesday, 14th December 2010.

Two senior councillors have stood down from Suffolk County Council's cabinet.

Cllrs Colin Spence and Colin Law were yesterday appointed to the cabinet, following the decision that Cllrs Rae Leighton and Bruce Provan stand down.

Cllr Spence has taken responsibility for public protection, having served as deputy portfolio holder. Cllr Law will be responsible for skills and economic development.

Cllr Spence will now be responsible for any cuts to the fire service, including those proposed at Haverhill fire station.

Reducing the station's full-time cover from seven days a week to five days a week is one of the range of cuts being discussed at today's meeting of the council's resources and performance scrutiny committee.

It would save £75,000, but a report to the committee admits it would increase response times, describing the resultant risk as 'acceptable'.

Cllr Jeremy Pembroke, leader of the ruling Conservative group on the council, said: “I would like to thank Rae and Bruce for their contribution and support.”
