Councillor loses battle over replacement shop windows

Tuesday, 27th August 2013.

A Haverhill borough councillor has lost his year-long battle to get the old windows re-instated at STP’s shop on the corner of Camps Road and Queen Street.

Cllr Gordon Cox wanted St Edmundsbury to take action against STP for replacing the wooden, small-paned windows with large white pvc ones, because it was in a conservation area and carried out without planning permission.

But he has been told by the council’s planning director Nicola Baker that, after inquiry, she has decided not to take any action because it was arguable that the new windows constituted an improvement.

Haverhill Area Working Party meeting on Thursday is due to agree the removal of Article 4 conservation directions limiting external changes which can be made to buildings in two areas of Haverhill, due to lack of staff to monitor them. Similar directions in Bury St Edmunds are to be extended.
