Councillor takes on rubbish job

Thursday, 19th July 2001.

A COUNCILLOR has volunteered to get his hands dirty to help improve the management of waste and recycling in the Haverhill area.

Coun Phillip French, a member of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, will be spending time with refuse collectors on their daily rounds in Haverhill and Clare, to see and understand the problems they face.

His experiences will be used to help carry out the Government's Best Value initiative, which is aimed at ensuring that local authorities provide an efficient, cost-effective service.

Coun French said: "At a meeting to discuss how we're going to improve our services, I became more and more aware that I didn't know very much about the problems faced by refuse crews every day.

"Now I'm going to see exactly how operations work, and I hope that my experiences will help us to build a clearer picture."

He added: "Closer understanding of the realities of our services will help us to see how management decisions affect them."
