Councillors object to Sturmer End car sales plan

Wednesday, 10th September 2014.

A business which has flouted planners for years, according to town councillors, received no support from them for a planning application to regularise its activities.

Members of Haverhill Town Council's planning committee have objected to an application by Robbie Watts to build a steel-framed industrial building for car servicing, MoTs and car sales at Sturmer End House.

Mr Watts was accused by town mayor Cllr Roger Andre of creating the 'final insult' after flouting planning regulations for years.

Cllr Andre said the proposal was for an ugly, industrial-type building not suited to that area which was the gateway to the town.

Cllr Pat Hanlon said members had been campaigning about this issue for years and trying to get enforcement as the business was carried out without planning permission, but it was still trading there.

"This will make it even worse," he said. "It is objectionable at the entrance to the town. I fully object to this."

Cllr Hanlon said they could not allow people to ignore enforcement and get away with it.
