County chairman hands over charity cash

Wednesday, 25th May 2011.

The chairman of Suffolk County Council, Cllr Eddy Alcock, today presented cheques totalling £5,856 to representatives of his two chosen charities - money raised during his year in office.

The cheques, both for £2,928, were presented to Robin Newell, chairman of the Suffolk branch of SSAFA Forces Help, and Andy Fry, chief fire officer of Suffolk County Council representing The Fire Fighters Charity.

The money has been raised in a variety of ways including individual donations, face painting at last year’s Suffolk Show, craft fairs and book sales in Endeavour House and the collection at the county council’s carol service.

Cllr Alcock has acted as chairman of Suffolk County Council since May 2010 and will be passing on the role to a new chairperson at tomorrow’s annual general meeting.

Cllr Alcock said: “I am delighted with the huge amount of money raised during my year as chairman.

“I feel very strongly about supporting our local charities and to be able to hand over two cheques for almost £3,000 each to the Suffolk branch of SSAFA Forces Help, and The Fire Fighters Charity, is simply fantastic.

“I want to thank all those who helped raise this money during the past year. Without their efforts this wouldn’t be possible.”

Receiving the cheque, Mr Newell said: “The Suffolk branch of SSAFA Forces Help has been helping ex-forces personnel and their families for over 126 years, and sadly the help the charity provides is still required by so many. This money will enable us to continue helping those who need our support.”

Mr Fry, said: “It has been a great pleasure to receive this cheque and to thank the outgoing chairman on behalf of firefighters and their families, not just in Suffolk but right across the UK.

“The charity relies on the generosity of people such as Cllr Eddy Alcock and I am so pleased that given so many choices he decided to support The Fire Fighters Charity.”
