County staff on hand throughout holiday season

Thursday, 24th December 2009.

Although it is holiday time for many, plenty of people will be working hard this Christmas to keep Suffolk's essential services running.

From gritting the roads to fighting fires, it is business as usual for many staff of the county's largest employer, Suffolk County Council, during this time.

Leader of Suffolk County Council Jeremy Pembroke said: “On behalf of Suffolk County Council, I really want to express my thanks to all members of our staff who will be working incredibly hard over Christmas to maintain vital services and continue to protect the most vulnerable people in our community. I am full of admiration for their dedication and professionalism.”

In addition to the dedicated staff in care homes across the county, ‘White Watch’ from the Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service will be on duty over the festive period, as well as employees from a range of other services including the county's children’s homes.

Simon White, director for children and young peoples services at the council said: “It’s very important everyone at our children’s homes fully enjoys the festive season.

"We know how hard our staff on the ground will be working to ensure all the children have a very happy Christmas. I would like to thank all the staff for their efforts, they are very much appreciated.”

Also on duty throughout Christmas and New Year will be someone from each of the county's three area highway teams to keep a close eye on the weather forecast.

Depending on the level of response needed, they will be able to mobilise some, or all of the council’s fleet of 38 gritters at any time of the day or night, to try to keep the roads as safe as possible.
