Court date looming in eyesore case

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 2nd March 2000.

A LANDOWNER could face prosecution if he fails to clear up an eyesore site at the edge of Haverhill.
Lesley Stolkin, who owns the six-acre site off Boundary Road, which is up for sale, now lives in Spain.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council officials had to track him down to find an address where an enforcement notice could be officially served on him.
This has now been done and Mr Stolkin has until March 31 to appeal against the notice, after which he has 120 days to comply or face prosecution.
For several years the site has been subject to fly-tipping of builders' materials and has half-completed buildings on it, once planned as a motel, which have been badly vandalised. It was planned as a prestige, high-profile site at the entrance to the town and local pressure group Enterprise 2000 has campaigned for it to be cleared up.
A planning application from Mr Stolkin to build 46 houses on the site was also turned down by planners.
Planners ruled the site was unsuitable for housing as there would be a conflict with existing industrial development.
Jim Robson of the St Edmundsbury legal department said they had met Mr Stolkin on the site and said while he was willing to have it tidied, he did not want to demolish the building.
