Crackdown on shoplifters goes up a gear

Monday, 6th December 2010.

Police in Haverhill are stepping up their blitz on shoplifting during the run-up to Christmas.

An increase in thefts from shops in the latter half of this year prompted police and businesses to get together to beat the thieves.

The recent addition to the town's Safer Neighbourhood Team compliment of police constables, PC Richard Oldroyd, has worked with town centre manager Tina Hanks to revice the Shopwatch scheme.

An assistant manager from Tesco is now chairing Shopwatch and the retailer is helping out with expertise on catching shoplifters.

Haverhill's police chief, Insp Chris Galley, said: "Tesco have very good practices for catching people, and very good security, so the rest of the business community is able to benefit from that knowledge.

"The increase is shoplifting we have seen may just be the result of proprietors being more aware and reporting more people because of better security.

"During the lead-up to Christmas we will be having increased patrols, both uniform and plain clothes to give support to the local shops, as this sort of crime is typically prevalent at this time of year."

The most common targets for thieves are clothing, alcohol, meat and other foodstuffs.
