Dangerous travel adapters recalled

Monday, 14th June 2010.

Suffolk Trading Standards are urgently recalling travel adapters sold in stores across the county as they pose a risk to the public and were found to present serious risk of electric shock or fire.

Tristram Singh, county council fair trading officer, said; “Consumers who have purchased either The Globetrek adaptor or The Shanghai Scorpio Electrical adaptor should stop using it immediately and we would advise them to return it if possible or dispose of it safely.”

Trading Standards know that Globetrek adaptors were available from Wotsits in both their Woodbridge and Halesworth stores. They were also available from wholesalers Reeves and Wright (Anglia) Ltd at Ransomes Europark and therefore could be available from other retail outlets.

Tests carried out by specialist electrical engineers concluded that The Globetrek adapter did not have adequate protection against electric shock as live parts could be accessed, there was no provision for earthing and it was not fused.

Tests on the Shanghai Scorpio Electrical adaptor show it did not prevent a risk of fire and provided inadequate protection again electric shock. This adapter also had no provision for earthing and did not contain a fuse.

The store selling this adapter has ceased trading and, as it is not possible to return the items, consumers are therefore advised to dispose of the adaptors appropriately by taking them to their local Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Officers found the chargers following a project looking into products sold in budget stores and have identified these two items as posing a serious risk to the general public.
