Defeat for league leaders at hands of Ely

Thursday, 30th December 1999.

LEADERS Downham were stunned at the Unwin Ground as Ely, edging closer to a place in the top six, stormed to victory. Scorelines often flatter to deceive, and that was the case as Ely recorded a 2-1 home victory to end the year on a high.
"We had so many one-on-ones that we could easily have scored five or six," said City chairman Derek Oakey.
"Balls over the top caused them trouble throughout the game, so hopefully this can be the springboard to greater things in the new year."
Scott Johnson curled home from 15 yards to give Ely the advantage they richly deserved after 53 minutes and Mike Egan finally made a one-on-one chance count 20 minutes from time.
High flying Downham got back in it, but Ely were well worth the three points.
Also March-ing into the year 2000 with heads held high are March, who romped to a 5-1 win over Chatteris - whose manager Mel Mattless was far from happy with his side's commitment.
He moaned: "I don't think we really turned up today, we did not perform on the day and March simply wanted it more.
"March played well and fully deserved the three points, although whether they deserved to win so convincingly is another thing."
Chatteris' players have plenty of time to think about their performance as they are not scheduled to have another league game until January 21, although they will attempt to play one or two midweek cup games in the meantime.
Elsewhere, there was no Christmas cheer for the Hamlet Croft Faithful as Haverhill Rovers' recent good form ended. The reds went down by a single goal to Cornard.
Somersham's home clash with Cambridge City reserves was postponed.
