Derby win sets up a showdown

Thursday, 22nd March 2001.

HAVERHILL stayed on course for this week's Eastern Counties Three North title showdown at Stowmarket when winning their local derby at Sawston.
But they left it late before their last-gasp try and conversion earned them a hard-fought 10-5 victory.
"It was a very good, tough game," said winning coach Sean McLeod-Jones. "They defended well, but I don't think they had the answer to our forward power."
That was a point with which Sawston player-coach Cameron Glanville agreed. "Their front row swung it," he said. "We could not compete with them there. Although a draw would have been a fair result, they might just have deserved their victory."
Mark Smith gave Sawston a first-half lead when he was driven over from a line-out catch and drive. Haverhill skipper Pete Young replied with a penalty and that is how it remained until half time and then deep into the second half.
Sawston were managing to disrupt their visitors' rucking game to continually frustrate their opponents when it seemed a Haverhill score had to come.
It finally arrived at the very death when Haverhill's control of the tight proved decisive.
Sawston heeled a ball at a scrum inside their own 22, but were being shunted backwards.
They picked up at the base to try and stabilise the situation but the Haverhill back row piled in and when the loose ball shot out, Danny Jennings was the first to react to score a try that Steve Power converted.
