Drive for sports volunteers to cope with Olympics spin-off

Thursday, 8th March 2012.

A Suffolk-wide project aiming to build on the inspiration of the London 2012 Olympics is hosting a conference to bring together people interested in sports volunteering.

Suffolk has thousands of volunteers involved in sport, from coaches to green-keepers, club secretaries to kit washers but many of them do not realise the benefit to sports they personally give.

But many more volunteers are still needed to help sports clubs and organisations to develop and expand.

The free conference, hosted by the Suffolk 2012 Volunteering Legacy Project, will take place on Tuesday, March 20, between 5pm and 8.30pm at the Kesgrave Community & Conference Centre.

It will:
• Provide a focus on raising the profile of volunteering in sport locally;
• Identify key issues that sports clubs face in recruiting and retaining volunteers;
• Act as a showcase for good volunteering practice.

The format for the evening will include an opening address from Cllr Kathy Gosling, Suffolk County Council’s portfolio holder for sport, culture, diversity, health and wellbeing, followed by an interactive voting session and discussion groups.

Mike McCarthy, conference organiser, said: "The increased interest in taking part in sport in this Olympic and Paralympic Year should also mean that the demand on our local sports clubs is increased.

"This will then see an increased demand on the volunteers that run these clubs and we want to highlight this and tap into the fantastic support that is out there to support the volunteers and their clubs."

This event is a must for volunteers in sport as well as representatives from sports clubs and organisations, disability sport groups, youth and community groups and other key stakeholders in local sport.

Spaces are limited so book your place now by simply logging onto 2012legacyproject.eventbrite.co.uk
