Drive-through faces refusal

Thursday, 6th January 2000.

PLANS for a McDonald's drive-through restaurant at Haverhill Retail Park are being recommended for refusal.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Planning Committee will consider the plan for the restaurant today.
The plan had been amended to reduce the restaurant from 75 to 50 seats and add more landscaping. However, the recommendation for refusal said the plan would be detrimental to the character of the commercial development and the amenities of nearby residents.
The town council said the plan was detrimental to the viability of the town centre, and also had traffic concerns.
Although they would prefer to see it in the town centre, planning officers did not feel the restaurant would have significant impact on the viability of the town centre.
Eighteen letters and a petition with 113 signatures were received opposing the plan because of fears of noise and disturbance to residents, as well as traffic concerns for Park Road. They said McDonald's would be welcome, but in a more suitable location.
