East Town Park among those named as best in the country

Tuesday, 29th July 2014.

Parks across St Edmundsbury which attracted an extra 150,000 visitors last year, have been named amongst the best in the country for cleanliness and safety.

The Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds, East Town Park in Haverhill, Nowton Park and West Stow Country Park, have all been awarded The Green Flag Award for 2014/15.

The Green Flag Award, made by Keep Britain Tidy, follows independent inspections of the sites earlier this year.

Yesterday’s announcement coincides with the launch of National Love Parks Week designed to encourage more of us to enjoy spending time in our local parks.

Cllr Sarah Stamp, St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s cabinet member for leisure, culture and heritage, said: “The school summer holidays have just started and a picnic or two in the local park is surely a must over the next six weeks.

“It’s inexpensive, it’s fun, and there are plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy and let off steam.

“They are fantastic places for families to visit and what is more, they are right on your doorstep.

“Every year we are seeing more visitors to our parks. We know that they are greatly appreciated by the community and it is brilliant news that our parks have retained the Green Flag award once again.

“It is the third year in a row that these four parks have won the award

“This lets people know that our parks are safe, secure, clean, and well looked after by our excellent team of staff and volunteers.”

The latest figures from St Edmundsbury show that in excess of 1.3m people visited the Abbey Gardens in 2013/14, an increase of more than 100,000 on the year before.

Visitor numbers to East Town Park rose to 68,700, from 63,000 in 2012/13.

Nowton Park saw an increase of more than 30,000 to its visitor numbers, with 261,000 recorded. And an extra 10,000 people went to West Stow with 122,800 visitors in 2013/14.
