East Town Park award could make it a favourite

Tuesday, 2nd August 2011.

East Town Park in Haverhill is one of three in St Edmundsbury to be adjudged among the best in the country by being given a green flag award.

And now you can vote for it to receive a special People's Choice award.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council is celebrating a hat-trick of the green flag awards - Abbey Gardens in Bury St Edmunds, Nowton Park, and East Town Park in Haverhill.

The Green Flag Award is a sign to visitors that the park is well-maintained and well-managed, with excellent facilities.

All three parks have previously won green flags, but have to re-apply every year to prove that their standards are being continuously improved.

The Abbey Gardens has recently seen the opening of an innovative new play area which thousands of children are enjoying, while the range of events and activities at East Town Park continues to increase.

Last week it hosted open air Shakespeare and this Sunday a touring company is bringing The Wind In the Willows to the park.

Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, the council's cabinet member responsible for culture and sport, said:
“I am delighted that these green flags have been awarded. The council recognises the value of open spaces and we continue to invest in them.

"They are free at point of use and attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The awards confirm our commitment to the well-being of the borough.”

Phil Barton, Green Flag Plus Partnership chairman, said: “I would like to congratulate this year’s winners, who have worked hard throughout the year to keep their parks and green spaces at a high standard and ensure they are pleasant and enjoyable spaces for the whole community.

"The Green Flag Award Scheme, and its growth, is essential in driving up the standards of our parks and green spaces. Access to quality green space is something we all desire and the scheme plays a key role in providing it.

"In these challenging financial times it is heartening that the number of Green Flag Awards continue to grow.”

All award-winning sites now have the chance to receive a further award from the Green Flag Plus Partnership, the People’s Choice Award.

This award is voted for by the public, so if you want to see your local park receive a national accolade as the people’s choice, then register your vote on: www.greenflagaward.org.uk
