Elderly Lady Tricked Out Of Money

Tuesday, 30th December 2003.

A thief tricked a woman in her 90s out of her money by posing as a rent collector.

The trickster called at the pensioner's home on Beech Grove, Haverhill, at 11.30am on Sunday and said he had come from the council to collect her rent.

She let the conman into her home and gave him a quantity of cash before he left.

It was not until later that she became suspicious and reported the incident to police.

A police spokesman said: "This form of crime is particularly disgusting as the offender often targets older and more vulnerable members of the community. This simply is not acceptable.

"We would ask the public to assist in reducing the chances of someone else becoming a victim of such a crime by informing elderly relatives or friends of this incident.

"They should also advise them always to ask for photographic identification when someone calls at the door.

"If in doubt, keep them out, and call 999 immediately."

The thief was white, aged about 50, of medium build, and 5ft 9in.

He was wearing a blue jacket and is not believed to have travelled to the victim's home in a vehicle.

Call DC Neil Vollenhoven on (01284) 774100 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 if you can help.
