Electors to have say in change

Thursday, 19th April 2001.

RESIDENTS have until the end of the month to express their preferences for the council reorganisation.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council will adopt the constitution favoured by electors under the Local Government Act 2000.
One of three options will be chosen for the executive system after all votes have been cast. A council leader with a cabinet, an elected mayor with a cabinet and an elected mayor with a council manager are the proposed systems. It will be decided by councillors whether the post of civic mayor will be kept when the new system is adopted.
Coun Derek Redhead, leader of the council, said the consultation gave people the chance to help choose the council's new constitution.
He said: "Whichever option is chosen will fundamentally change the way the council makes its decisions. It will also hopefully encourage more people to take an interest in local democracy."
Leaflets outlining the choices are available from council offices or by calling (01284) 757034. The closing date for return is April 30.
