Ex-treasurer 'does not remember £9,000 theft'

Thursday, 16th November 2000.

A FORMER treasurer who stole more than £9,000 from a charity for the disabled has had his sentence postponed because of medical problems.
Phillip Tilley, 34, appeared before Judge Nicholas Beddard at Ipswich Crown Court yesterday.
The judge agreed to an application from defence barrister Tim Brown for sentencing to be postponed until December 12 after the court was told of Tilley's memory loss in relation to the offences.
In seeking the adjournment, Mr Brown commented on the contents of a pre-sentence report from the Probation Service.
Mr Brown said the author had wondered whether any "medical or psychological condition might be relevant".
The court also heard from Mr Brown that Tilley, of Fakenham, in Norfolk, had been referred by his GP to a neurologist to investigation a possible condition of temporary epilepsy.
Mr Brown said his client suffered from a loss of memory. Commenting on the pre-sentence report, Mr Brown confirmed that Tilley had no recollection of committing the offences.
But he had admitted the charges because "the evidence is overwhelming", he said. He accepted his guilt, said Mr Brown.
At an earlier court appearance, Tilley admitted 31 charges of theft involving more than £9,000 belonging to LAMPH the Local Association for the Mentally and Physically Handicapped based in Haverhill.
The circumstances of the theft will be given by the prosecution on December 12.
