Firefighters Get Ready For 1000 Mile Charity Bike Ride

Friday, 11th March 2005.

Firefighters in Haverhill will cycle 1,000 miles from Lands End To John O'Groats to raise money for charity.

Three firemen hope to complete the route from Cornwall to Scotland in two gruelling weeks.

Another firefighter will act as their support driver throughout the ride.

Paul Goodman organised the ride to fulfil his dream of completing the challenge before his 40th birthday.

He said, "It is something I have always wanted to do before I am 40 and as I am now 38 I thought I had better get a move on.
The lads have taken on the challenge to keep me company."

The men cycle around neighbouring villages in early morning training sessions to prepare for the ride in May when they will need to average 70 miles a day to complete it in two weeks.

Mr Goodman said: "We want to buy Rosie Maternity Hospital a piece of equipment. Money will also go to Breast Cancer Awareness and the Fire Service Benevolent Fund. We want to raise £10,000 for the charities and if anyone has a camper van they could lend us we would appreciate it."

If anyone would like to sponsor the group contact Paul on (01440) 702123.
